Hand cut brass and mica pieces pinned at varying heights honor the ephemeral beauty of dappled light through tree boughs. With the natural world in such obvious peril, I am feeling an overwhelming urgency to guard and treasure those things we stand to lose. The complexity of the ecosystems sustained by trees from their bowers to roots is substantial, and yet the feel of dappled light on my skin is what leaves the woods with me. The ecosystems we inhabit are vital to our survival, but so is the simple joy of spending time within them. Dappled is an ode to both.
Created as a site specific installation for the Four Seasons Chicago, this mica and brass piece recalls dappled light through tree bowers. This piece was designed in relation to the neutral and gilded palette of the reception area, meant to draw your eye to it’s undulating shape while adding to the existing atmosphere of luxurious tranquility. Each piece of mica and brass were hand cut by the artist and affixed directly to the wall with brass finishing nails. The pieces “float” off the wall at varying depths, catching the light and adding to the sense of movement.
